Weight My Truck App

Case Study

CAT Scale Company provides the professional truck driver a reliable, accurate, and certified weight through the cooperative relationship with our truck-stop partners. We will guarantee the highest quality at a fair price.

“Weight My Truck” - revolutionizes how professional truck drives weigh their trucks!

The application is one of the best ideas to have in nowadays, and especially this application is very useful and time-saving service for hard working people. It really make a difference to the truck drivers and transportation companies.

The Problem

After interviewing of 25 Truck Drivers, We found out that 12 of them using an application, 8 didn't know about application and 5 truck drivers don't want to use the application.

The first problem is the main button that positioned in bottom of the screen.

We asked 25 truck drivers to use “Weight My Truck” application and 15 of them were using both hands to press main button, 9 of them were stretching their thumb finger to press main button and 1 truck driver accidentally dropped the phone when he was trying to reach the button.

All of the interviewed truck drivers were using newer smartphones (Iphone 6,6+,7,7+,8,8+ X & Samsung Galaxy S6, S9, S9 Plus and so on), because a most of their paperwork is going through the smartphone (scanning documents, GPS, ELD, Routing application (Trucker Path, MyPilot, Weather)) and an application to weigh a truck in more than 1800 places all over US & Canada - “Weight my truck”.

After each of 25 Truck Drivers spend 5 to 15 minutes using application, we found next issues and/or missing features :

  1. Very uncomfortable Main button. (1 out of 25 Truck drivers refused using this application only because of the location of the button and it is 4%)

  2. Access to scale tickets. “Weight My Truck” doesn't have online or local list of previous scale tickets inside the application. The only place where truck driver can review his scale tickets is his email and/or online account that you can reach only with internet browser. Also it makes impossible to check weight of the truck right after application was closed.

  3. Full Account. 23 out of 25 truck drivers didn't know that you can login to your account through internet browser.

  4. Changing Payment Method. 25 out of 25 truck drivers thinking that you are not able to change your payment method, and they were creating new accounts.

  5. Re-entering information. Inside “Weight My Truck” application there is no list of previously used trucks and trailers. If  truck driver use different truck or trailer, he needs to enter this information again every time.

  6. No-Print. There Is no possibility to print your CAT scale ticket from application (Most of the truck drivers would like to have a printed ticket. A lot of truck drivers have a printer inside their truck)

Very hard to use with one hand

60% of truck drivers use 2 hands

Very easy to drop the smartphone

CHECKING EMAILS

Users & Audience

The target users of “Weight My Truck” are most male, professional drivers age of 25 to 65 years, most of them driving interstate semi trucks.

These users get used to paper documents in trucking weigh

These users have a strong preference for mobile-first, fast, real-time service usage.

A key differentiator of this user group is that they prefer non-mobile use, because truck drivers need a “paper” that shows them and to the authorities the weight. Most of truck drivers don’t know, that they can show application with scale ticket to DOT officer, or send it via email.

Team & Role

I coordinated and led all facets of design including: information architecture, user task flows, interaction, visual, product, and prototyping. I also conducted user research using methods such as interviews, surveys, focus groups, and participatory design in order to address both user behavior and attitudes.

Design Process

In order to identify if this product was worth building, as well as what it needed to accomplish, we started out by assembling a focus group of target users. After sifting through all of their feature requests, we were able to identify their key pain points: they wanted enlarge and reposition main button for better usage of application, they wanted to have a list of previous scale tickets with possibility to print them out through WIFI printer, also they wanted to have Truck & Trailer list, that can be edited and saved, and the last feature that most of truck drivers wanted is changing payment method inside application.

User Interface Design

The objective of the interface was to make more handy and easy to use application with 1 button. This was accomplished through the use of re-position and resizing of the main button, changing gradients, also adding more features like previous scale tickets and changing payment method.

To understand how users use application, we created “Weight My Truck” user flow diagram with listed features:

Cat Scale Diagram
cat-diagram
BUTTON

Than we designed main button for “big fingers” and “small eyes” that now can be easily reached without using two hands or dropping down the phone.

PAYMENTS

We added User inside “Weight My Truck” application with options to change a payment method inside an application. And now available such payment methods as:

  • Apple Pay

  • Google  Pay

  • Credit/Debit Card

Scale Tickets

And we created inside application a list with previous scale tickets for past 360 days with possibility to send one, some or all scale tickets at once to different emails.

  • Quick View

  • Quick Access

  • Highlighted weigh

  • Dated Sorting

  • Sending multiple

We added Saved Trucks & Trailers list for truck drivers that often use multiple trucks or/and trailers.

Saved Trucks
  • ADD Trucks

  • ADD Trailers

  • ADD License Plates

  • Mix Truck & Trailers

We decided to Improve application without changing Cat Scale color scheme/or Logo colors (with respect to more than 18000 Cat Scale locations).

It means we used:

Yellow Color: #fcdb04

Black color: #000000

Green Color: #119c51

Red Color: #e13426

And Roboto Font

Also we designed new logo for “Weight My Truck” application, to fit better inside smartphones.

The Solution

  1. Change the location, shape and size of the main button;

  2. Add scale ticket list and details inside application;

  3. Add editable user information (email, password, truck information) inside the application;

  4. Add changing payment method inside application;

  5. Create Trucks & Trailers list with possibility to add favourite 1 truck and 1 trailer;

  6. Create print via wifi Cat scale ticket.

  7. Quick access to previous tickets

Outcome

We want to offer for truck drivers more convenient mobile-first, fast & real-time approach to weigh their trucks. Mobile phone - is what truck drivers use on everyday basis for work & pleasure.
